NEW GLASS FUSING COURSE - EMBELLISHMENTS & ADORNMENTS Instructor Norma Jean McCallan

This two night class is for both the beginner fuser and those with previous fusing experience. During the class you will have the opportunity to try a wide variety of fusing accessories while making four inch flat fused glass tiles. The different accessories used include: Glassline Paints and paper. Special paints in a variety of colors  that can be applied in detail to the surface of glass prior to firing. Glassline Paper is a specially formulated paper that can be cut and ripped to a size and then fully remains after firing. Dichroic glass is an expensive glass containing multiple micro-layers of metals or oxides which give the glass optical properties. Photo fusing paper allows images like photographs to be applied to a glass surface and when fired are permanently transferred onto the glass surface in sepia color. As well there is the use of glass stringers, rods and frit. Please note that all student finished projects not be available to take home at the end of the second night. This is due to the projects having to go through a kiln firing process which takes up to 12 plus hours. So you will have to come back to pick up your projects.

Glass Fusing - Instructor Jeremy Dane Morris

Description: Glass fusing is a very popular art form that was offered here at Kona for the very first time in December 2006. Specialized fusing glass is cut to shape using glass cutters, mosaic cutters and glass grinders. Glass is stacked in varying heights,  accessory products such as confetti, noodles, stringers and rods are used to add detail and then the project is placed in a glass kiln and "fired" at tempatures up to 1465 degrees Fahrenheit. The results are amazing. The glass melts together, creating a flat and fantastic art piece.

But wait, it's not finished. After this piece has been fired and cooled, it goes back into the kiln. This time it is placed on top of a ceramic mold or fibre board ( molds come in a variety of shapes and sizes and fibre board can be cut to virtually any shape ). The kiln goes up in temperature to 1375 degrees and during this phase the glass actually takes to the shape of the form used. Official lingo translation ='s "slumping" So now your fancy little art piece has turned itself into a bowl, plate, dish or whatever. You thinking wow? It's very cool.
